I recently watched the season finale of Game of Thrones Season 6, but do not fear, there are NO SPOILERS HERE!
Instead, a mere observation of one scene, which really got me thinking! How much have we progressed as human beings? How far has technology taken us?
If knowledge is power, then the human race in 2016 is a Mercedes F1 car racing our ancestors in a donkey-pulled cart that is missing a wheel! We have everything we could possibly need, right at our fingertips, and it's easy to be oblivious to what a privilege that is.
Watching Game of Thrones, we look on as Sam, who has not much to his name, is permitted to enter a library. He is excited! The concept of a library huge. A library was the internet once upon a time. The library was where you went to find knowledge, where you found power.
It's actually not that old a concept, up until the early-2000's, the library still played a huge role in my education. It still was my main source of knowledge and information, as I furiously cobbled-up last-minute assignments that were due 'yesterday'!
So, back to the scene, Sam walks in, excited about the knowledge and information he'll be exposed to, but as he pans around, and looks up the grandiose, multilevel library, extending as far as the eye can see, he is stunned. He is amazed. He is surrounded by more knowledge, information and power than ever before. Anything he wants to know, is there, before him, and it is endless!
This is what we now know as the internet. The internet was the library. The library is now the internet. These vast annals of information now sit at arms reach. Need to find a quote from an American Vice-President in the 1930's? No need to go to the 7th level, climb a ladder and reach for a resource on the top-shelf. Just type it into your iPhone.
Knowledge is power, and in 2016, that power is in our pockets, in our phones, the very same phones we might also watch Game of Thrones on. Perhaps Sam was inside your iPhone recently, just like, essentially, he is in the above image!
